Akira on 4k Blu-ray was one of the best viewing experiences I have had in a long time (Spoilers)
I picked up a 4k disc while browsing a store in the UK which sells pre-owned 4k discs, videogames etc. The last time I had seen this I think it was on VHS with a tape borrowed from the local library when I was in high school.Watching it was a great experience, it took me back to the time when I was really into Akira Kurosawa movies, Godzilla kaiju movies, Final Fantasy 7, Lone Wolf and Cub etc to the point I actually started learning Japanese to be able to understand some of the dialogue. Still to this day I would call Seven Samurai my favourite movie of all time. This is a Funimation release and I think there was some controversy about non-Japanese discs not having HDR grading, but be that as it may the disc I had was clean and looked great to the point this release from 1989 would not look out of place if it came out today.Very vivid colours and so many sequences like the opening destruction of Tokyo, the motorbike chase and fight, Tetsuo's mental degradation and body horror, his p rampage through the city and the final battle in the Olympic stadium with Sol raining lasers down while Kaneda tried to take on a god single-handed were just so awesome to watch again in this format.Right from the get-go the 5.1 audio track fully immerses you to the point I really did not miss Atmos.Besides all that the story is great, the characterisation is really good and I am now thinking of getting all the six volumes of the manga to read. Kaneda in particular came off as a hothead but a brave, intensely loyal and fierce friend who was very resourceful and quick-thinking in life-threatening situations. The Colonel seemed to initially be the antagonist but really he was a disappointed and jaded man who was very disgusted with the pettiness and recklessness of the people he answered to. He was also very brave and put himself right at the front of the battle with Tetsuo with his genuine concern for the safety of Takashi, Kiyoko and Masaru shining through. I bet he has a strong bond with a pet cat etc.Anyway this got me thinking that I will probably switch my 4k viewing from recent releases to those I last saw much longer ago since the format really gives classics a new lease of life. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/GvHpXIO
