In "The Santa Clause 2" is it specified why, after eight years of doing it alone, Santa suddenly needs a wife?

I know; it's just a silly kid/family movie and the real questions are what happened to the former Mrs. Claus when her husband died in the first movie? and why did none of the Elves bother mentioning "The Mrs. Clause" for eight years until a month before it was was required?Still, I'm genuinely curious if there is any in-movie explanation for why it took eight years before Santa started to lose his magic.
