How did Christopher Nolan get away with Tenet?

Just finished Tenet. I have never been so confused by a movie in my life. God knows how he was able to get Studio sign off on this film. The soundtrack is fantastic and as usual the visuals are excellent but the story is so complicated and so unbelievably difficult to follow.
