Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners is a magnificent work of cinema
This movie is incredible. A dark as hell, gritty mystery with Gyllenhaal starring as a detective searching for Hugh Jackman, Maria Bello, Veronica Davis and Terrance Howard's daughters.Gyllenhaal delivers a top tier performance as a tired, overworked detective dealing with the pressures of a crazy case. Hugh Jackman delivers the most compromised, and vulnerable performances of his career, which if you've only seen him as Wolverine, my god go and watch this film because the man proves beyond any doubt how talented he is. Terrance Howard is great too, in fact everyone in this film nails their roles. There's a brutal scene where Jackman is threatening another character and Terrance Howard is in the background of the shot and he's sobbing while looking so terrified, the whole movie is a masterclass of acting. The direction and cinematography is both sweeping and claustrophobic which works so well in this movie during certain scenes involving characters being confined. You feel a constant sense of unease and fear that ramps up more and more, crescendoing beuatifully in such an awesome, high paced finale and the story is smart, thought provoking, incredibly bleak and frightening with tremendous dialogue and pacing. This is one of my favorite films, and maybe I'm biased because these actors and the director are also favorites of mine, but I think Denis is easily one of the top 3 directors in the world right now, and Prisoners really showcases how great of a filmmaker he is.This is a must watch for sure, and it's on Hulu now, go watch it! via /r/movies https://ift.tt/h2Okon7
