Box Office Week - Avengers: Infinity War opens at #1 and breaks the all-time opening weekend record set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247.9M) with $258.1M. It also beat Fate of the Furious ($541.9M) for the biggest worldwide opening with a $640.8M debut.

Do you guys think Avengers: Infinity War is a success? Kind of feels like superhero fatigue. I mean it only came in at #1 with $258.1M, the biggest opening weekend of all time topping the previous record holder Star Wars: The Force Awakens which opened with $247.9M by over $10M. I mean I guess it also had the highest Saturday gross of all time with $83M (far surpassing the previous record holder Jurassic World's $69.6M Saturday gross) and the highest Sunday with $69.2M (surpassing the $60.5M Sunday gross of Force Awakens) but it only came in #2 for all time Friday and biggest single day with $105.9M so it's kind of a huge flop huh? I mean I guess it'll make it's money overseas, cause it was the biggest worldwide debut ever massively topping previous record holder Fate of the Furious' $541.9M opening with $640.8M so I guess it'll scrape by. Oh and it beat that record without even opening in China this weekend so there's that. I mean it only topped Justice League's entire domestic run and almost it's entire worldwide run in a single weekend so ya know, it's close. Too bad, guess they'll have to cancel Avengers 4 and turn it into a TV series. Was a good run.Avengers: Infinity War (cont.) - No of course I'm being dumb, this was a monster hit. Huge. Let's not forget The Force Awakens was the first true sequel to one of the biggest franchises of any era before MCU and again it beat that opening by $10M. And Force Awakens opened in the holiday season when everyone was getting off work and out of school. This is the film that basically starts off the summer season and it's now decimated every opening weekend record as the start of the summer proper. That's not just remarkable, it's incredible. Going into the weekend it was obvious the film would crack the top 5 openings but Friday made it seemed it just wouldn't crack that magic Force Awakens ceiling. But Saturday was just massive, perhaps people being cautious of waiting for positive word of mouth or scared that Friday would be so jam packed that Saturday ended up almost repeating the Friday gross. By the Sunday Disney easily had estimates it beat opening and then just got to swagger in this morning and add another $8M onto that final total like something with stones and a glove. The opening is an extreme testament to how well Disney, Marvel, and Kevin Feige have built the good will of the universe over 10 years and now that patience is paying off with massive returns.Avengers: Infinity War (cont.) - So let's talk about where this film goes from here, at least domestically. Of course overseas the film will just destroy, especially when it does open in China in two weeks. But over here the story is of course going to be will we be able to make fun of /u/mi-16evil for saying Black Panther will make more domestic and if so when? Well the bad news for me and good news for Infinity War is it has a whole lot of room the next two weeks. No one dared even opened a counter-programing film in wide this weekend and there's no major challengers until three weeks from now with Deadpool 2. That gives the film a hell of a lot of breathing room to have three massive weekends that could be enough to widen the gap. In terms of multipliers Infinity War needs to hit 2.8x in order to catch up and surpass Black Panther which is likely to end its run just over $700M domestic. If the film performs like Avengers Uno it will make it to $700M and then some as that film scored a 3x multiplier but if it performs more like Age of Ultron or Civil War we are looking at sub $600M. Obviously the next two weekends will be major tells of how far the film will go in that regards but with an A on Cinemascore it seems the audiences are pretty pleased with the film. That said the darker tone and long running time of this film reminds one of the how that affected The Last Jedi, though this film is certainly a lot more beloved in the core fanbase. Only time will tell, but I can assure you someone will gloat and if I lose I'll give you all a platform to do it.Films Reddit Wants to FollowThis is a segment where we keep a weekly tally of currently showing films that aren't in the Top 5 that fellow redditors want updates on.
