What is the best example of "failed Oscar bait?"
According to Wikipedia, Oscar bait is "a term used in the film community for movies that appear to have been produced for the sole purpose of earning nominations for Academy Awards or "Oscars", as they are commonly known." Every fall we notice what these Oscar bait movies are. Recent examples include 2016's The Post and 2017's Darkest Hour.Oscar bait films are usually historical dramas focused on either historical figures or dark moments in history such as the Holocaust or slavery. If set in the present day, the main character will have some sort of disability or handicap. So we've seen Oscar bait movies being nominated and even winning Oscars, but what about the movies that fail to do either? I'm talking about the Oscar bait movies that get rejected by critics and become forgotten relics. One example I can think of is 2013's Diana with Naomi Watts. It current sits at 8% on Rotten Tomatoes and didn't make a profit at the box office. The film is focused on a prominent British historical figure (Diana, Princess of Wales) and came out around Oscar season in the fall.
